The Beginnings Of IndustrializationCRISPR: gene editing is just the beginning : Nature News & Comment. Illustration by Ryan Snook. Molecular biologists are riding a wave of new technologies made possible by CRISPR. Whenever a paper about CRISPR–Cas. Addgene quickly find out. The non- profit company is where study authors often deposit molecular tools that they used in their work, and where other scientists immediately turn to get them. It is also where other scientists immediately turn to get their hands on these reagents. Since then, molecular biologists have rushed to adopt the technique, which can be used to alter the genome of almost any organism with unprecedented ease and finesse. Addgene has sent 6. CRISPR- related molecular tools — about 1. CRISPR- related pages were viewed more than one million times in 2. Much of the conversation about CRISPR–Cas. What CRISPR offers, and biologists desire, is specificity: the ability to target and study particular DNA sequences in the vast expanse of a genome. And editing DNA is just one trick that it can be used for. Scientists are hacking the tools so that they can send proteins to precise DNA targets to toggle genes on or off, and even engineer entire biological circuits — with the long- term goal of understanding cellular systems and disease.“For the humble molecular biologist, it's really an extraordinarily powerful way to understand how the genome works,” says Daniel Bauer, a haematologist at the Boston Children's Hospital in Massachusetts. The cell's native DNA repair machinery generally mends the cut — but often makes mistakes. That alone is a boon to scientists who want to disrupt a gene to learn about what it does. For our children to truly know God and make Him known, they must have opportunities to read and learn His Word. Are you desiring for your young children to hide God's. End time Bible prophecy is fulfilled as ISIS carries out genocide and persecution of Christians in Iraq and Syria. NO,The world did not end in 2012, but the world as we know it did. Just as the Mayans predicted, Dec 21 2012 marked the The Beginning Of The END. The genetic code is merciless: a minor error introduced during repair can completely alter the sequence of the protein it encodes, or halt its production altogether. As a result, scientists can study what happens to cells or organisms when the protein or gene is hobbled. But there is also a different repair pathway that sometimes mends the cut according to a DNA template. If researchers provide the template, they can edit the genome with nearly any sequence they desire at nearly any site of their choosing. In 2. 01. 2, as laboratories were racing to demonstrate how well these gene- editing tools could cut human DNA, one team decided to take a different approach. Instead, the enzyme stalled there and blocked other proteins from transcribing that DNA into RNA. The hacked system allowed them to turn a gene off, but without altering the DNA sequence. The team then took its 'dead' Cas. With a few other tweaks, they had built a way to turn genes on and off at will. Several labs have since published variations on this method; many more are racing to harness it for their research. Hacking CRISPR'). One popular application is to rapidly generate hundreds of different cell lines, each containing a different guide RNA that targets a particular gene. Martin Kampmann, another systems biologist at UCSF, hopes to screen such cells to learn whether flipping certain genes on or off affects the survival of neurons exposed to toxic protein aggregates — a mechanism that is thought to underlie several neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's disease. Kampmann had been carrying out a similar screen with RNA interference (RNAi), a technique that also silences genes and can process lots of molecules at once, but which has its drawbacks. This allowed them to activate or inhibit genes at three different sites all in one experiment. Lim thinks that the system can handle up to five operations at once. The limit, he says, may be in how many guide RNAs and proteins can be stuffed into a cell. Weiss and his colleagues have also created multiple gene tweaks in a single experiment. She studied gene therapy, which targets genes mutated in disease. But after a few years, she decided to change tack. The best way to control gene activity, she thought, was to adjust the epigenome, rather than the genome itself. The epigenome is the constellation of chemical compounds tacked onto DNA and the DNA- packaging proteins called histones. These can govern access to DNA, opening it up or closing it off to the proteins needed for gene expression. The marks change over time: they are added and removed as an organism develops and its environment shifts. Hi Felipe, Thanks for your post. This is a heady topic, no? You said: “but to think that jesus as such existed with god seems to me like something from the urantia. A brief history of the company that changed the computing world forever. Includes specifications, a description and pictures of every Apple computer ever made. In the past few years, millions of dollars have been poured into cataloguing these epigenetic marks in different human cells, and their patterns have been correlated with everything from brain activity to tumour growth. But without the ability to alter the marks at specific sites, researchers are unable to determine whether they cause biological changes. In April 2. 01. 5, Charles Gersbach, a bioengineer at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and his colleagues published. The team found that adding acetyl groups to proteins that associate with DNA was enough to send the expression of targeted genes soaring, confirming that the system worked and that, at this location, the epigenetic marks had an effect. When he published the work, Gersbach deposited his enzyme with Addgene so that other research groups could use it — and they quickly did. Gersbach predicts that a wave of upcoming papers will show a synergistic effect when multiple epigenetic markers are manipulated at once. The tools need to be refined. Dozens of enzymes can create or erase an epigenetic mark on DNA, and not all of them have been amenable to the broken- scissors approach. The new tools have democratized the field, she says, and that has already had a broad impact. People used to say that the correlations were coincidental, Rots says — that if you rewrite the epigenetics it will have no effect on gene expression. More than 9. 8% of the human genome does not code for proteins. But researchers think that a fair chunk of this DNA is doing something important, and they are adopting CRISPR–Cas. Some of it codes for RNA molecules — such as micro. RNAs and long non- coding RNAs — that are thought to have functions apart from making proteins. Other sequences are 'enhancers' that amplify the expression of the genes under their command. Most of the DNA sequences linked to the risk of common diseases lie in regions of the genome that contain non- coding RNA and enhancers. But before CRISPR–Cas. The results have sometimes surprised her. In one unpublished experiment, her team deleted an enhancer that was thought to be important, yet no gene within one million bases of it changed expression. My postdoc would have been a lot shorter.”More surprises may be in store as researchers harness CRISPR–Cas. DNA. Groups led by geneticists David Gifford at MIT and Richard Sherwood at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston used the technique to create mutations across a 4. The result was a map of DNA sequences that enhanced gene expression, including several that had not been predicted on the basis of gene regulatory features such as chromatin modifications. Delving into this dark matter has its challenges, even with CRISPR–Cas. The Cas. 9 enzyme will cut where the guide RNA tells it to, but only if a specific but common DNA sequence is present near the cut site. This poses little difficulty for researchers who want to silence a gene, because the key sequences almost always exist somewhere within it. But for those who want to make very specific changes to short, non- coding RNAs, the options can be limited. Last year, the lab of Feng Zhang, a bioengineer at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, characterized a family of enzymes called Cpf. Cas. 9 and could expand sequence options. But Agami notes that few alternative enzymes found so far work as well as the most popular Cas. In the future, he hopes to have a whole collection of enzymes that can be targeted to any site in the genome. But CRISPR–Cas. 9's effects are permanent, and Gersbach's team needed to turn genes on and off transiently, and in very specific locations in the tissue. The resulting system triggers gene expression when cells are exposed to the light, and stops it when the light is flicked off. A group led by chemical biologist Moritoshi Sato of the University of Tokyo rigged a similar system. Cas. 9 that edited the genome only after it was hit with blue light. Others have achieved similar ends by combining CRISPR with a chemical switch. Lukas Dow, a cancer geneticist at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, wanted to mutate cancer- related genes in adult mice, to reproduce mutations that have been identified in human colorectal cancers. His team engineered a CRISPR–Cas. Cas. 9, allowing it to cut its targets. The tools are another step towards gaining fine control over genome editing. Gersbach's team has not patterned its blood vessels just yet: for now, the researchers are working on making their light- inducible system more efficient. He slogged away, making the tools necessary for gene targeting, injecting them into embryonic stem cells and then trying to derive mice with the mutation. The cost: a year and US$2. This time, Xue just ordered the tools, injected them into single- celled mouse embryos and, a few weeks later — voil. My postdoc would have been a lot shorter.”Researchers who study everything from cancer to neurodegeneration are embracing CRISPR- Cas. It lets them engineer more animals, in more complex ways, and in a wider range of species. Xue, who now runs his own lab at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, is systematically sifting through data from tumour genomes, using CRISPR–Cas. Researchers are hoping to mix and match the new CRISPR–Cas. This may allow scientists to capture and understand some of the complexity of common human diseases. Take tumours, which can bear dozens of mutations that potentially contribute to cancer development. That could recapitulate human behaviours and progression of disease more effectively than mouse models, but would have been unthinkably expensive and slow before CRISPR–Cas. Merrin is also an ordained Roman Catholic priest who, still haunted by what he was forced to do during World War II in his native Holland, eschews any religion or belief. He's fascinated by what he finds and that it dates hundred of years before Christianity was introduced to the area. Accompanied by a young priest, Father Francis, to keep an eye on the religious elements of what they find, Merrin makes his way to the camp. There he meets a young doctor, Sarah and soon realizes there is an air of gloom that envelops the entire site. Workmen go mad and a young boy is mauled by a pack of hyenas while completely ignoring his younger brother Joseph. Inside the church itself they find signs of desecration. Merrin is forced to re- examine his lack of faith and come face to face with the devil.

The kind of character you can’t even imagine even if you wanted to make one up. So instead of talking about virality I want to talk about personal branding because there’s a lot we can learn from them. It’s all highly relevant to the Marketing & Advertising scene in Dubai. Super- crowded market, lots of competition, lookalike agencies everywhere, and ripe for disruption. Stand out from the crowd with personal branding. Personal branding is one of the easiest ways to differentiate yourself in a saturated industry like marketing, in a saturated geography like Dubai, where everyone offers the same services in much the same way. It can be particularly effective for small agencies in Dubai who are trying to compete with the big boys – the Leo Burnetts and Memac Ogilvys of our region. In this post I am going to go through 1. Salt. Bae and Chicken Connoisseur you can, hopefully, use to grow your business and make more $$$. You need to find your niche. The first thing that immediately stands out is #Salt. Bae and Chicken Connoisseur focus on ONE thing. A niche of a niche.#Salt. Bae does big- ass steaks, Chicken Connoisseur does chicken wings and strip burgers. ONLY. Do you think either would have gone viral if #Salt. Bae was just another wannabe celebrity chef or Chicken Connoisseur was a generic food- review Youtuber? No, the schmancy eatery game and food Vlogging game are saturated as f***. Marketing & Advertising in Dubai is the same. As a small agency, you don’t have the luxury of offering every service under the sun. You will get smashed by the big agencies who have the economies of scale to do everything in- house. I’m so sick of every agency website I visit having the same value generic proposition. You’re not a “full- service” anything. You’re 5 guys, sharing office space with 2 other “full- service agencies,” outsourcing everything but your sales team to India. Repeat after me. I need to find my niche. I need to find my niche.”Especially in an industry that’s as broad and deep as marketing: Print advertising, mass communication, TV/radio ad buys, PR, PPC, SEO, Social Media marketing, Re- marketing, Inbound marketing, content marketing, e- mail marketing, affiliate marketing, brand marketing, yadda yadda yadda. It’s a sea without a shore. How are you going to differentiate yourself from your competitors for “marketing” as a whole? You can’t. It’s impossible. And if you can’t differentiate yourself, your business is fungible. If your business is fungible, the only way you can compete is on price. So, now we have a s***ton of lookalike “full- service agencies” who have to be the cheapest to get work. And they have to cut corners to make any kind of profit, which means the quality tanks. It’s a vicious cycle. You need to be the go- to guy for one specific thing. Notice I’m not saying you need to ONLY do this one thing. Eventually, once you’ve maxed out your credibility in your niche (or even gotten to 8. It was easy money and we could have taken them, but we want to play the long game. There’s a cool side- effect of being #1 in your niche – you can charge a premium for your services and people will gladly pay. YOU are the value proposition. I’ve seen a lot of haters online saying “I can be #saltbae. All I need is a sharp knife and sunglasses.”Nah, son. You can’t. Same goes for Chicken Connoisseur. I actually had the idea to copy him – I would go around Dubai reviewing Mandi spots. Then I came to my senses and realized that: I’m not obsesed with Mandi and it would get old, fast. I do very poorly with carbs (seriously, one time I was THIS CLOSE to crashing my car because I went into a carb coma after eating biryani.)Anyway, my point is this. YOU are the value proposition. More specifically, your personality. Not your business, which is a licensed name, a logo, and an office – all inanimate objects. You, the person. Every agency has one person (or several) with a charismatic personality who can act as the “face” of the agency. It’s a combination of a lot of different things but they’ve got that “it” factor. Some people are born with it, but don’t get it twisted – charisma is a skill that can be learned. It’s probably best if your Faceman is the founder or CEO, but it could work just as well with someone else in your team – Head of Marketing, PR, etc. We’re only a two man team at Dropkick Copy but both my brother and I have memorable personalities. More on this in #1. You need a “calling card”While the core of having a likeable personality is key, you also need to have something unique about you. It’s the one thing people will always remember about you. For #Salt. Bae, it’s his grandiose, salt- sprinkling flourish. For Chicken Connoisseur, it’s his Crepcheck at the beginning of every episode. For Ramit Sethi, it’s his eyebrows. For Neil Patel, it’s is crazy marketing experiments like “Who is Neil Patel?” (no link because it’s NSFW) and “how Spending $1. Clothes Made Me $6. I have my own signature – shaved head and massive beard. More on that in #7)In a world of short attention spans, you need an edge to stand out from the crowd. Pick something that’s unique about you, and magnify it. Regularly. It could be anything – the way you look, the way you dress, your body language, your speech patterns, your smile, a color you’re never seen without. Or be forgotten. 4) Use the Halo Effect. This is a byproduct of having a niche. By first focusing on a niche to create credibility and trust with your audience, you can leverage a cognitive bias known as the Halo Effect. It’s the tendency we humans have for an impression created in one area to influence opinion in another area. Here’s a great example, when Elijah (Chicken Connoisseur) is asked to review turkey sandwiches by BBC Radio 1. Xtra’s Charlie Sloth (watch from 1: 5. Here’s an example of Nusret (#Salt. Bae) commenting on Family. The caption reads: “A man who does not spend time with his family is not a real man.”(Those aren’t his kids, btw. They are his extended family. He’s allegedly not married.)The key here is to use the Halo Effect ethically. Don’t use it to extend your credibility to subjects you know f***all about. For you, as a marketer, once you’ve developed trust in your niche, the Halo Effect is an excellent way to branch out into other niches. How we use it at Dropkick Copy is, we will only write about topics related to Conversion Copywriting and Content Strategy until we generate enough credibility in these niches to branch out. Focus on one channel. This is somewhat related to having a niche. Facebook Live or Periscope.)Look, there are only so many hours in the day. And you have an agency to run. So you need to limit your personal branding efforts to 1- 2 channels, especially when you are starting out. It’s also another opportunity to use the Halo Effect described earlier. For example, if you are a blogger, you can leverage your existing audience when you start a podcast. There’s a caveat here, though. You can have your fingers in several channels by saying yes to invitations to do guest appearances. Technically, depending on your availability, you could be blogging, guest posting, Youtubing, podcasting, live streaming, and public speaking. When you’re starting out, say yes to every invitation. As you become more popular and start to get incessant requests, you will have to be more selective. We’ve been slacking when it comes to the Dropkick Copy blog (mainly because we are busy with passion projects – more on this in #1. Now, I’m not advocating anything crazy like shutting down all your social media accounts.(Cal, you trippin’.)On the contrary, you need to “be present” on at least the 3- 4 major social media platforms. Just don’t let them distract you from your primary content channel. The value of a cameraman. This only applies if Video is your chosen medium but you can apply the same concept to other channels. When it comes to execution, this is the most important tactical insight you will gain from #Salt. Bae and Chicken Connoisseur. They aren’t the only one’s that do it – notable examples are Gary Vaynerchuk: And Mike Rashid: Just think about how much mental energy is freed up if you don’t have to fiddle with your phone, Go. Pro, or DSLR. How much better will you be when you can focus entirely on your performance and communicating your knowledge and message? Can you imagine #Salt. Bae salting a steak while distracted by whether or not the camera angle is just right? Or Chicken Connoisseur trying to comment on how “peng dem wings are” while fumbling with his i. Phone, fingers slathered in chicken grease? Do you think your viewing experience would be even remotely close? Even from a practical perspective, this is a no- brainer. Imagine you like to blog but you’re not a very good writer. How much more motivated to blog would you be if you paid someone to edit your content? Imagine you have a podcast but don’t have the time to create detailed show notes. How much faster would your podcast grow if you paid someone to create transcripts for every episode and published them on your show’s website? Why different skin colors may have evolved. Stretching across the Nazca plains like a giant map or blueprint left by ancient astronauts, lie the famous Nazca Lines of Peru.Nazca Lines and Cahuachi Culture. Nazca Lines and Cahuachi Culture. Nazca Lines Stretching across the Nazca plains like a giant map or blueprint left by ancient astronauts, lie the famous Nazca Lines of Peru. Peru is associated with the Inca Civilization. No one has proof as to who built them and what their function was. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity, were made and remade throughout the whole pre- hispanic period, forming a most impressive, as well as enigmatic, archeological group. The desolate plain of the Peruvian coast which comprises the Pampas of San Jose (Jumana), Socos, El Ingenio and others in the province of Nasca, is 4. Km. South of Lima, covers an area of approximately 4. Andes. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 3. With no dust or sand to cover the plain, and little rain or wind to erode it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of a lighter- colored subsoil beneath the desert crust, provide a vast writing pad that is ideally suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark for eternity. When the gravel is removed, they contrast with the color underneath. In this way the lines were drawn as furrows of a lighter color, even though in some cases they became prints. In other cases, the stones defining the lines and drawings form small lateral humps of different sizes. Some drawings, especially the early ones, were made by removing the stones and gravel from their contours and in this way the figures stood out in high relief. The concentration and juxtaposition of the lines and drawings leave no doubt that they required intensive long- term labor as is demonstrated by the stylistic continuity of the designs, which clearly correspond to the different stages of cultural changes. An example of this is the drawing of a weird being with two enormous hands, one normal and the other with only four fingers. Also represented are drawings of man- made objects such as yarn, looms and . All these figures have well- defined entrances which could be used as paths or to allow people to line together along the conformations of the drawings. The most well- known being is The Astronaut at 3. Maria Reiche in the 1. They are actually on some hills in the El Ingenio Valley and Pampas de Jumana near the desert floor. Archeologists have been alerted to authenticate the find. Many of the lines form geometric figures: angles, triangles, bunches, spirals, rectangles, wavy lines, concentric circles. Four- legged Animals. Wing (Ascension of Consciousness)Hummingbird or Phoenix (Creation)Condor. Whale. Spider - Spider Woman or Spiderweb Effect. Flower - Flower of Life? When the gravel is removed, they contrast with the light color underneath. In this way the lines were drawn as furrows of a lighter color. Off the Pampa, south of the Nazca Lines, archaeologists have now uncovered the lost city of the line- builders, Cahuachi. It was built nearly 2,0. Passengers reported seeing 'primitive landing strips' on the ground below. Today people sometimes fly in hot air balloons to view the splendors of the Nazca Lines, their eneries awakening something within their souls. A boom in copper and gold mining - including a mine built in 1. Nazca Lines with tracks from truck traffic. Archaeologists say they are watching helplessly as the quest for scholarship and conservation in a country viewed as the cradle of New World civilization is losing out to commercial interests, bleak poverty and the growing popularity of heritage sites as tourist attractions. But the soft clay soil and layer of brown and black rocks in the Nazca desert would seem an unsuitable site for landing and were blown away by the power of rocket propulsion. The aliens left - never to return - leaving the people confused. Like in the modern cargo cults they tried to call the Gods back by drawing lines, figures and trapezes. An extraordinary series of solar eclipses coincided with the construction of the Nasca lines. Some Lines are aligned with the winter solstice, a less spectacular but more regular, death and rebirth of the Sun God. The primary lines were an offering for elders, heaven, and mountain deities who gave them water for their fields. The positions of the sites are given in the geometry of their construction. A very ancient system of numbers was used in the system, which we will call Gematria. Gematrian numbers are found in ancient myths and religions, including the Bible. Gematrian numbers were used in systems of weights and measures by ancient peoples, including the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Persians, the Babylonians and the Romans. The system also uses conventions that are still in use, such as the 3. The ancient Mayans used Gematrian numbers in their very accurate timekeeping. Formations like the spider and the monkey could show star constellations like Orion and Ursa Mayor. The problem with all astronomical theories is the unknowing of the age. The direction of stars changes within centuries, explained by the precession of the equinoxes. She argued that the Nazca Indians constructed the Lines some time between 3. BC and AD 8. 00. In support of this possibility, some scientists have put forward ingenious ideas on how the geoglyphs could theoretically have been designed from the ground. The more important evidence, however, is that which attempts to link the Lines definitively to the Nazcan culture. Here, neither of the two key pieces of evidence survive close scrutiny. It is claimed that this proves that the Nazcans constructed the Lines. On the contrary, the dating of these materials tells us only that the Nazcans lived in the area of the Nazca Lines. Since the Lines themselves cannot be radiocarbon dated, the possibility remains that they already existed when the Nazcan culture emerged. The second piece of evidence is the alleged resemblance of the Nazca geoglyphs to certain features found on Nazca pottery. This is an important issue because it potentially offers proof that the Nazcans had either designed the images or at least viewed them from the air. Maria Reiche died in 1. She is buried in the arid valley she loved so well. In 1. 97. 3, Dr Gerald Hawkins studied 1. Further the Nazca- line- system was used to measure the precipitation value. Figures, especially seabirds, have a connection to the meteorological prophecy system of the Nazca- Culture. Her ideas for the trapezoid formations: places for holy animals before sacrifice them, or field claims connected with filter galleries, observatories or places for ritual ceremonies of the different clans. Alford concluded that the Nazca- Lines was made by Negroid Slaves of the Tihuanaco Culture. After a revolution the Negroid population destroyed some figure, this is the explanation for overdrawn zigzag- formations. Later this people went in northern direction and founded Chavin and the Olmec culture. Robert Bast linked the lines to the Flood Stories in his book A Memory of the Deluge. He obtained a length of the square side of about 5. Meter. In the formation he recognized a Zodiac. Trapezoides show the broadness of the waterstream, zigzaglines show where they end, lines show into direction of the puquitos. He explain the nature of the figures by rod- dowsing (to find the subterranean water) and shamanstic flights (to overview the figures). It was built nearly two thousand years ago and was mysteriously abandoned 5. New discoveries at Cahuachi are at last beginning to give us insight into the Nazca people and to unravel the mystery of the Nasca Lines. One of the most famous and distinctive features of the Nazca culture is the polychrome pottery which has attracted attention because of its technological refinement and the exciting symbolism of its motifs. This pottery culture spreads in the area of the valleys of Chincha, Pisco, Ica, Nazca and Acari. The most popular choices of color were red, black, white, brown, yellow, gray and violet with an outline in black. Bowls and beakers were common forms, but double- spout and head- and- spout jars are also found. Birds, fish or fruits were commonly drawn on the pottery, and Nazca's religious or mythological features were also used in its design. Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Orefici has been excavating the site for the past few decades, bringing a team down every year. The site contains over 4. These events probably involved the Nazca lines and the giant sand dune of Nazca. Support for the pilgrimage theory comes from archaeological evidence of sparse population at Cahuachi and from the Nazca lines themselves which show creatures such as killer whales and monkeys which were not present in the Nazca region. Trade or travel may explain the images. Due to the dry climate the finds are quite rich and include even such ephemeral material as clothing. Looting is the greatest problem facing the site today. Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Orefici has been excavating the site for the past few decades, bringing a team down every year. The site contains over 4. It has also been studied by Helaine Silverman, who has written a book on Cahuachi. These events probably involved the Nazca lines and the giant sand dune of Nazca. Support for the pilgrimage theory comes from archaeological evidence of sparse population at Cahuachi and from the Nazca lines themselves which show creatures such as orca and monkeys which were not present in the Nazca region. Of course, trade or travel may explain the images. Due to the dry climate the finds are quite rich and include even such ephemeral material as clothing. Most of the burial sites surrounding Cahuachi were not known until recently and so present a very tempting target. They are found all over the world; the most famous examples are located at Nazca, where thousands of such designs - from real and imaginary creatures to geometric shapes - have been etched into the Peruvian desert. Original work. Scooby- Doo, Where Are You! The original series, Scooby- Doo, Where Are You!, was created for Hanna- Barbera Productions by writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears in 1. This Saturday- morning cartoon series featured four teenagers—Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville . Animation have produced numerous follow- up and spin- off animated series and several related works, including television specials and made- for- TV movies, a line of direct- to- video films, and two Warner Bros.–produced theatrical feature films. Some versions of Scooby- Doo feature different variations on the show's supernatural theme, and include characters such as Scooby's cousin Scooby- Dum and nephew Scrappy- Doo in addition to or instead of some of the original characters. Scooby- Doo was originally broadcast on CBS from 1. ABC. ABC aired the show until canceling it in 1. A Pup Named Scooby- Doo, from 1. New Scooby- Doo series aired as part of Kids' WB on The WB Network and its successor, The CW Network, from 2. Mystery Incorporated aired on Cartoon Network from 2. The result was The Archie Show, based upon Bob Montana's teenage humor comic book Archie. Also successful were the musical numbers The Archies performed during each program (one of which, . Silverman was eager to build upon this success, and contacted producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera about possibly creating another show based on a teenage rock group, this one featuring teens who solved mysteries in between gigs. Silverman envisioned the show as a cross between the popular I Love a Mysteryradioserials of the 1. Archie characters or the popular early 1. The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Their original treatment, based in part on The Archie Show, was titled Mysteries Five and featured five teenagers: Geoff, Mike, Kelly, Linda, Linda's brother W. W. When The Mysteries Five were not performing at gigs, they were out solving spooky mysteries involving ghosts, zombies, and other supernatural creatures. Ruby and Spears were unable to decide whether Too Much would be a large cowardly dog or a small feisty dog. After learning the characteristics of a prize- winning Great Dane from her, Takamoto proceeded to break most of the rules and designed Too Much with overly bowed legs, a double chin, and a sloped back, among other abnormalities. The treatment retained the dog Too Much, while reducing the number of teenagers to four, removing the Mike character and retaining Geoff, Kelly, Linda, and W. W. The teens were now based on four teenage characters from The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Dobie Gillis, Thalia Menninger, Zelda Gilroy and Maynard G. CBS president Frank Stanton felt that the presentation artwork was too scary for young viewers and, thinking the show would be the same, decided to pass on it. The rock band element was dropped, and more attention was focused upon Shaggy and Too Much. According to Ruby and Spears, Silverman was inspired by Frank Sinatra's scat ! The original voice cast featured veteran voice actor Don Messick as Scooby- Doo, radio DJ Casey Kasem (later host of radio's syndicated American Top 4. Shaggy, actor Frank Welker (later a veteran voice actor in his own right) as Fred, actress Nicole Jaffe as Velma, and musician Indira Stefanianna Christopherson as Daphne.! The series theme song was written by David Mook and Ben Raleigh, and performed by Larry Marks. Each of these episodes features Scooby and the four teenage members of Mystery, Inc., Fred, Shaggy, Daphne and Velma, arriving at a location in the . Encountering a ghost, monster, or other supernatural creature who is terrorizing the local populace, they decide to investigate. The kids split up to look for clues and suspects while being chased at turns by the monster. Eventually, the kids come to realize the ghost and other paranormal activity is actually an elaborate hoax, and—often with the help of a Rube Goldberg- like trap designed by Fred—they capture the villain and unmask him. Revealed as a flesh and blood crook trying to cover up crimes by using the ghost story and costume, the criminal is arrested and taken to jail, often repeating something nearly identical to . Seven of the second season episodes featured chase sequences set to bubblegum pop songs recorded by Austin Roberts. With Stefanianna Christopherson having married and retired from voice acting, Heather North assumed the role of Daphne, and would continue to voice the character through 1. Of the similarities between the Scooby- Doo teens and the Dobie Gillis teens, the similarities between Shaggy and Maynard are the most noticeable; both characters share the same beatnik- style goatee, similar hairstyles, and demeanors.! Both series featured four youths with a dog, and the Famous Five stories would often revolve around a mystery which would invariably turn out not to be supernaturally based, but simply a ruse to disguise the villain's true intent. The roles of each character are strongly defined in the series: Fred is the leader and the determined detective, Velma is the intelligent analyst, Daphne is danger- prone, Shaggy is a coward more motivated by hunger than any desire to solve mysteries, and Scooby is similar to Shaggy, save for a Bob Hope- inspired tendency towards temporary bravery. During that decade, Hanna- Barbera and its competitors produced several animated programs also featuring teenage detectives solving mysteries with a pet or mascot of some sort, including Josie and the Pussycats (1. The Funky Phantom (1. The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan (1. Speed Buggy (1. 97. Goober and the Ghost Chasers (1. Jabberjaw (1. 97. Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels (1. Hanna- Barbera musical director Hoyt Curtin composed a new theme song for this series, and Curtin's theme would remain in use for much of Scooby- Doo's original broadcast run. After two seasons and 2. New Movies format from 1. CBS began airing reruns of the original Scooby- Doo, Where are You! For their 1. 97. 6–7. Scooby- Doo were joined with a new Hanna- Barbera show, Dynomutt, Dog Wonder, to create The Scooby- Doo/Dynomutt Hour (the show became The Scooby- Doo/Dynomutt Show when a bonus Scooby- Doo, Where Are You! Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, now working for Silverman as supervisors of the ABC Saturday morning programs, returned the program to its original Scooby- Doo, Where are You! Pat Stevens took over her role as the voice of Velma. For the 1. 97. 7–7. The Scooby- Doo/Dynomutt Show became the two- hour programming block Scooby's All- Star Laff- A- Lympics (1. Laff- a- Lympics and Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels. In addition to eight new episodes of Scooby- Doo and reruns of the 1. Scooby- Doo also appeared during the All- Star block's Laff- a- Lympics series, which featured 4. Hanna- Barbera characters competing in Battle of the Network Stars- esque parodies of Olympic sporting events. Scooby was seen as the team captain of the Laff- a- Lympics . Scooby's All- Stars continued broadcasting reruns of Scooby- Doo from 1. Scooby- Doo aired during a separate half- hour under the Scooby- Doo, Where are You! After nine weeks, the separate Where are You! The special revolved around Shaggy and Scooby attempting to convince the network to move Scooby out of Saturday morning and into a prime- time series, and featured spoofs of then- current television series and films such as Happy Days, Superman: The Movie, Laverne & Shirley and Charlie's Angels. In 1. 97. 9, Scooby's tiny nephew Scrappy- Doo was added to both the series and the billing, in an attempt to boost Scooby- Doo's slipping ratings. Lennie Weinrib voiced Scrappy in the 1. Don Messick assuming the role thereafter. At this time, Scooby- Doo started to walk and run anthropomorphically on two feet more often, rather than on four like a normal dog as he did previously. Fred, Daphne, and Velma were dropped from the series, and the new Scooby- Doo and Scrappy- Doo format was now composed of three seven- minute comedic adventures starring Scooby, Scrappy, and Shaggy instead of one half- hour mystery. Most of the supernatural villains in the seven- minute Scooby and Scrappy cartoons, who in previous Scooby series had been revealed to be human criminals in costume, were now real within the context of the series. This version of Scooby- Doo and Scrappy- Doo first aired from 1. The Richie Rich/Scooby- Doo Show, an hour- long program also featuring episodes of Hanna- Barbera's new Richie Rich cartoon, adapted from the Harvey Comics character. From 1. 98. 2 to 1. Scooby- Doo and Scrappy- Doo were part of The Scooby- Doo/Scrappy- Doo/Puppy Hour, a co- production with Ruby- Spears Productions which featured two Scooby and Scrappy shorts, a Scrappy and Yabba- Doo short featuring Scrappy- Doo and his Western deputy uncle Yabba- Doo, and The Puppy's New Adventures, based on characters from a 1. Ruby- Spears TV special. Beginning in 1. 98. Scooby- Doo were broadcast on ABC Saturday mornings in addition to first- run episodes. Airing under the titles Scooby- Doo Classics, Scary Scooby Funnies, The Best of Scooby- Doo, and Scooby's Mystery Funhouse, the rerun package remained on the air until the end of the 1. Heather North returned to the voice cast as Daphne, who in this incarnation solved mysteries with Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy while working undercover as a reporter for a teen magazine. This version of the show lasted for two seasons, with the second season airing under the title The New Scooby- Doo Mysteries. The 1. 98. 4–8. 5 season episodes featured semi- regular appearances from Fred and Velma, with Frank Welker and Marla Frumkin resuming their respective roles for these episodes.
